Big Ben Gallery 302
« on: September 01, 2017, 09:45:09 AM »
I had this little Big Ben pipe dedicated to heavy aromatic tobaccos as Winslow, below as it was:

after some simple restoration with an acrylic ring added now looks like this:

You can see the procedure step by step here: http://pipe-smoke.blogspot.gr/2010/02/7.html
The pipe code is: M7-9

or you can watch it in a video with slide show photos and instrumental music:

It does add some snap.  Personally, I'd narrow the white segment to the width of the black band on the pipe.  That would bracket that section.  Now it is narrow, wide, medium roughly.  And I think narrowing the white to roughly the black band width would be aesthetically more pleasing.  But that's just me.  It still is a very nice addition.

My dear sir there isn't any white part in my pipe, what you see in the shank it's the reflection of the light. I haven't paint any of my pipes this way and i would never do it in any of them. I have no Light Box for photos, all are from my small bench in the balcony what's why in all of my pipes you can see the reflexation of the light on them.

Thank you all for the support!

Sid, I believe he is referring to the new ring.  It appears to be slightly wider than the bit and shank.

I like it that way myself. :)

That's why we buy our own pipes, each has a different view of what we like :)

Yes to what pipe Mama said.  It is just my view of how the sizing works and hardly definitive.  I guess it is how we view proportional looks.

Oh, i forgot to mention that many times in purpose the ring's height is one click bigger than shank's because it's extremely hard to match perfect a shank-an additional ring-a tenon without to use sandpapers, lathe etc which means extra effort to re-paint the bowl etc.
When the bowl in in natural colour you can do anything but after paint plus shellac your options are limited. Sometimes when i glue the ring on the shank there it's impossible to get a perfect match thus i make the ring one click bigger and a fill the gap with colour or shellac so no one can spot the black spots which the gap exposes to the eye when you look the pipe from "profile".
