It's that time of year.
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:24:12 AM »
McClelland's releasing this year's Christmas Cheer and Holiday Spirit at the Vegas show next week. Is anyone excited for these this year? I didn't notice a lot of buzz last year.

I'll buy my usual three or four tins for the cellar, but I'm really not that excited.  My tastes have changed some since I first started collecting it.  I still enjoy it, but don't get the thrill I used to.

Ok, maybe I'm a little excited.

I'll wait until the reviews start coming on it.  Last years did not create much buzz, your right.

It's too hot to be thinking about Christmas. Tomorrow's another day.

That's kind of what I was thinking. How is this tobacco seasonal if it's out for sale so early.

By the way, I got an add this week from Target promoting its Black Friday sale, which is, of course, the "official" start of Christmas sale (even though it follows all those pre-Black Friday sales), so they are definitely desperate to stretch the Christmas season.

I've been buying a couple tins each year & putting them away. With some age on it, Christmas Cheer is a superlative Va. Can't wait for the year-end & hot weather again.

I always buy at least two. One to smoke, one to cellar. Hell, I've got odds and ends of Christmas Cheer going back to 1996; albeit, transferred to small mason jars and labeled by year.
A well defined problem is already half solved.

I just ordered a tin of each. Is it generally recommended to age these before smoking?

Anything containing VA aging makes a huge difference in how it smokes, so yes, aging recommended.

Thanks StrongIrish, I do not think I will be able to resist trying it out un-aged first, though I will cellar some.

Nothing wrong with that.  Whenever I buy a new blend to try, I always buy one to try and one to cellar to start.  There are many blends that smoke well right off the bat, then the one in the cellar becomes stellar in a few years.

I just received a tin of 2011. This is my first foray into the CC (and full VA for that matter) so I just got one tin that I already opened because I'm antsy. I haven't smoked it yet, but man oh man does it smell good! I'm thinking I might have to order some more to cellar for next year. I just hope it tastes half as good as it smells.
